John Schaffer made the journey to the Alaskan Peninsula so he could hunt the monster Brown Bears of unit 9. Camped just feet from the Bearing Sea, Schaffer endured days of rain and near gale force winds. After 9 days hunting the lower valleys without seeing a bear, it was time to break camp and head up the mountain. On day 10 Schaffer awoke to more wind and more rain, but this day was different, day 10 brought the first bear sighting of the hunt. After an hour of climbing Schaffer was ahead of the bear. He spotted it lying above the bank of a high mountain stream. The guide and Schaffer moved in closer for a better look at this beast. This bear was a shooter! After an hour of watching the bear, playing the wind, the bear was suddenly up and moving...right at Schaffer and his guide. 30 yards out the bear turned broadside and Schaffer sent his arrow ripping through this massive beasts lungs. Within seconds it was all over...the bear lay dead in the high mountain stream.

After an unsuccessful hunt in 2005, John Schaffer once again set out to hunt Bison in the pink mountains of British Columbia. Old man winter was cold, very cold, with temperatures reaching 30 below zero. This years hunt found Schaffer looking at hundreds of Bison and many good bulls. Three days into the hunt a lone bull was spotted feeding in a heavily wooded area and the stalk was on! Schaffer found his best shooting lane and called upon his trusty Black Max 2 to unleash the fury on this massive beast. Needless to say the Schaffer family will be eating a lot of Bison tenderloin on their dinner table in 2007.
